About the Conference

The Lightweight Structures in Civil Engineering (LSCE) Conference is an international scientific event organized by the IASS Polish Chapters. For more than three decades, it has served as a forum for the exchange of scientific knowledge, design experience, and discussion on the development of modern lightweight structures in civil engineering and architecture. The 32nd edition of the conference will be held on 3–4 December 2026 in Gliwice, Poland. The conference is organized by the Silesian University of Technology in cooperation with the Polish Association of Building Engineers and Technicians (PZITB), Gliwice Branch.

Conference Mission

The conference aims to bring together researchers, engineers, architects, and practitioners involved in the design, analysis, construction, and operation of lightweight structures. LSCE provides a platform for presenting current research results, exchanging design experience, and fostering collaboration between academia, engineering practice, and industry.

Conference Topics

  • spatial, truss, and shell structures,
  • tension, membrane, and pneumatic structures,
  • long-span roofs and engineering structures,
  • steel, timber, aluminium, and composite structures,
  • hybrid structures and adaptive systems,
  • structural modelling, numerical analysis, and optimization,
  • digital design methods and construction technologies,
  • structural diagnostics, monitoring, and rehabilitation,
  • sustainable design and material efficiency,
  • innovative structural solutions in architecture and civil engineering.
Contributions addressing related topics associated with lightweight structures and modern structural systems are also welcome.

History of the Conference

The first LSCE (Lightweight Structures in Civil Engineering) Conference was held in Warsaw in 1995. Since then, the event has been organized annually by the IASS Polish Chapters, becoming one of the longest-running conference series dedicated to lightweight structures in Central Europe. The development of the conference has been strongly influenced by distinguished representatives of the international shell and spatial structures community, including:
  • Prof. Jan B. Obrębski (1943–2020) – founder of the IASS Polish Chapters and initiator of the LSCE Conference,
  • Prof. Zygmunt S. Makowski (1922–2005) – pioneer of space structures and founder of the Space Structures Research Centre,
  • Prof. Stéphane du Château (1908–1999) – creator of innovative spatial structural systems,
  • Prof. Stefan J. Medwadowski (1924–2026) – President of IASS from 1991 to 2000,
  • Prof. Romuald Tarczewski – Chair of the IASS Polish Chapters since 2014.
